Parker Live! with David Jofre of Axtion Club

From the first moment that Governor Inslee announced his stay at home orders, David Jofre of Axtion Club gym in Bellevue got to work. His chief concern? How will his gym members continue receiving fitness guidance and motivation when the gym is closed? “The main ingredient that makes Axtion Club great is community. We welcome anybody, whatever your fitness level is. Everybody is different,” he says, “so you have to support all of it.”

They had to act quickly. Luckily however, technology has advanced to the point where gym members are able to keep in touch. He immediately jumped into starting Zoom classes and loaned gym members his equipment to have at home. Without knowing how long the stay-at-home would be, he went on to build a new website which feature recorded fitness videos and he made those available to his members. “From day 1, we offered many options to move forward.”

David credits the speed of the gym’s response and his willingness to just jump into filming videos for his early success. The work that he put in showed his members and clients that the gym cared about their well-being. What’s interesting though, is the video and remote workout videos unveiled a potential new revenue stream. They even had new members who joined the gym to take part in the remote workouts. 

David shares that he has received many positive emails about the new format. While online fitness classes introduce a whole new dynamic for fitness instructors, he hears from his members that it is worth it. “They say, ‘Thank you very much for doing these classes. It’s keeping me sane.”

One challenge that people have been letting David know about is the difficulty of staying motivated throughout the quarantine. His recommendation is to set a schedule. People should just pick a time and at that time, do something, even if its just going for a walk. Think about the reason you want to be healthy and from there, you can build on what you are doing. Getting into the habit of doing something at that time is key.
