How a Temp Agency Helped Administrative Professional, Jacob, Settle in Seattle

It’s an awfully big drive from New Jersey to Washington, but Parker contractor, Jacob Hubbell, and his brother took the leap and ended up here in beautiful Seattle! With Parker’s help, Jacob landed a role with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Western Washington as an administrative assistant. We were lucky enough to snag a few minutes of Jacob’s time to hear about his new role, his trip across the country, and advice he has for those interested in relocating to the Seattle area!

// Hi Jacob! Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. Let’s start with your current position. Can you tell us a little bit about the role you were placed into by Parker?

I am currently working as an Administrative Assistant for the Mechanical Contractors Association of Western Washington. I help with the day to day operations of this branch of the broader Mechanical Contractors Association of America. Being an admin assistant has been very interesting; I’ve helped create newspaper advertisements, assisted in hosting a few events, and prepared educational materials for our on-site contractor classes.

// Administrative assistants can be the unsung heroes of the office – stepping in on any tasks to help the team! So, let’s back track a bit. How did you come across Parker in the first place? Can you describe what the process working with Parker was like?

I actually ran across Parker on and applied to a job listing that they had listed there. I was called before the day was out asking me what time would work best to set up an interview at the Parker offices, I believe we settled on the following week. From the moment I walked into the office I felt like I was in the right place. The interview was very informative and reassured me I was on the right path. Within a few days I had already been scheduled for an interview for an employment opportunity and another scheduled less than a week after that. Although those opportunities didn’t result in employment for me I have been placed twice into temporary positions which has allowed me to experience a new side of the job spectrum and build my resume with more recent and relevant work experience.

// We’re so glad you’ve had such a positive experience. Speed and communication are very important to us because we know it’s also important to our candidates. Now that you’ve been in the role for a bit, what are your favorite things about your new job?

My favorite thing about this new job is the challenge of setting up new event spaces for our member events. It’s really exciting to get to go out to a new location and meet new people. I’ve also enjoyed some of the more creative work I’ve been asked to help with, like creating a full page newspaper ad thanking the speakers and sponsors of one of our events. It feels like every day I go in I get to try something new and broaden my horizons a little bit more, I just love that.

// What a great experience! This seems like the perfect role to continue to build up your resume. So we heard you recently relocated to Seattle from New Jersey. Wow! Do you have any advice you can share with anyone looking to move and start their careers in Seattle?

I actually moved from a small town in upstate New York, my hometown. I took the leap and drove out here with my brother all the way across the country, it was a pretty wild trip! I’d definitely recommend driving the distance as opposed to flying, if you can afford it. It’s a beautiful country that we live in and it’s worth seeing as much of it as you can. The biggest hurdle that you’ll face in getting set-up in a new place is employment, you should definitely be willing to take new job opportunities, and try different things. Not only will it help keep you afloat financially, it will also be a great way to make new friends! Also, get an ORCA card. Taking the bus into work in the morning is a great way to avoid the usual headaches that come with the morning commute.

// This is really great advice, thank you, Jacob! Now, if I read your resume correctly, you worked in the Catskills. What was your favorite part about working there?

The Catskills are such a wonderful place to experience, any season is a great time to visit and there’s so much natural beauty to see there. Many places in the Catskills feel like they’ve been lost to time and they’re just waiting to be rediscovered. I worked there for years as a hotel front office manager and it was always so much fun helping to show visitors the hidden places only a local would know about. I got to meet lots of very interesting people and it felt like as much as I was there to check them in to the hotel, I was also their welcoming committee to the Catskill region.
